Well, you know, Muni Metro planning dates...Thanks.

Well, you know, Muni Metro planning dates from the mid to late 1960s (although it didn't open up until 1980), so at the time I'm not sure they were worried about going over capacity. I imagine the idea was just that they wanted to improve things for the riders of the existing streeetcars, which I'm sure they did.

That's an interesting idea about using the tubes that way. Presumably to do that you'd have to build pretty extensive track interchanges at either end of the tunnels. I don't know if it's been suggested before, but then I don't know if anybody's actually suggested repurposing the Muni Metro subway for BART before, either. (Although I assume for anything I think up, somebody else probably had the idea first.)

Certainly many people have suggested closing Market Street to automobiles, although not usually in conjunction with moving the streetcars back to the surface.Aaron Privenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03917490770780098370noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-477596989452107281.post-71960387222641971092016-03-12T11:58:15.417-08:002016-03-12T11:58:15.417-08:00I love this post. Perhaps you can enlighten me. I ...I love this post. Perhaps you can enlighten me. I recently moved here from NYC and so I'm looking without a lot of background info. It seems to me MUNI's use of the upper level tubes on Market st is horrendously inefficient. It seems like the gating factor in getting more BART traffic through the transbay tube is mostly about the dwell time. I would've proposed blocking Market set to all vehicle traffic, and making buses and MUNI use the rails at street level. Now you have 4 tubes BART can utilize. In this fashion you can more effectively utilize the transbay tube by running more traffic through it and just routing each train along different tubes. So morning rush hour could use three Market street tubes coming into the city and one going out, even usage during regular hours and 3 tubes going out of the city during evening rush hour. Has this ever been proposed? Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04892829350237508780noreply@blogger.com
